The Galant Style [tx]

@

  • Music life in the early Classical Period reflected the international culture and many advocated [] that the ideal musical style was made up of the best features of music from all nations.

  • At the same time, many repelled [ƥ] the flamboyant [Bت] Baroque style of music with melissmatic [Ħ] and ornamented [˹] melodic lines. They regarded music should be natural to the extent that it emulated [ĥ] the flow of speech.

  • Educated people wanted music to communicate expression without artifice i.e. in a manner free of any complication that would hinder musics enjoyment and appeal.

  • Based on the above two prevailing trends, a musical style known as the galant style [tx] became the foundation for the musical idiom of mid- to late eighteenth century.

Food for Thought

  • Why do you think it is necessary to have both recitative and aria in an opera?

  • In what sense is classical music more natural than Baroque music?
