SET DESIGN

Ms Leung Wing Suet

In addition to devoted actors, realistic and spectacular sets also contribute to the success of a musical. The sets you see are the painstaking effort of the unit’s teachers and members. It is done finally after exhausting paints and drawing pens and bedaubing numerous clothes. However, one can hardly imagine the joys we have when our effort is displayed before the audience.

The sets for the first play “Comeback Kid” were simple, the audience’s attention was drawn mainly to the acting. The rich sets of the second musical, “Soul for Sale”, added colour to the whole play. The acting was highlighted in the rich sets accompanied with great visual effects. Though more sophisticated sets means increased workload for the unit, we were able to transform the pressure to an impetus; gladly accepting kind criticisms, refining our work to perfection.

Unlike the last two musicals, the scenery of the third one, “The Last Move”, is more than a single plane design. A 3-dimensional design is incorporated in order to enhance reality. We are giving the audience a brand-new visual experience. We have done a lot, and of course we long for many happy returns. Acknowledgment and compliments are what we long for. We hope the school will keep supporting the Set Design Unit and nurture many more students specialising in the field, so that we will continue to light up the stage.
